Windows come in different designs and sizes and are also classified according to the materials that were used to create them. When choosing home replacement windows, it is best to find out what the characteristics are of these designs.Window Classes
Sliding Windows or Sliders
This type of windows is sometimes referred gliding windows. Sliders are perfect for space-saving and works great at sealing energy in. This type has two sashes and only one can be “opened” to allow ventilation.Double-Hung Windows
For a more classic look, this type is a good option. Double-hung windows have two sashes in one frame. The sash can slide either up or down for ventilation and some designs feature sash that can be tilted for easy cleaning.Single-Hung Windows
This type is not as popular as the double-hung but this is commonly used in areas that are not exposed to a lot of dust. Only the bottom sash is operable and the top is fixed.Casement Windows
Casement windows are opened with a crank handle and the window sash opens or swings toward the outside or inside. This type provides maximum ventilation. There are two types of casement windows: awning and hopper. Awning windows are hung horizontally and swing outwards. Hopper windows on the other hand, open by tilting the sash vertically and often open inwards.
Casement windows are not very popular for home replacement jobs, as this type is mostly suitable for contemporary house designs.
Glass Block Windows
This type is probably the most durable as this window features a thick and break-resistant glass. This provides added security to homes but doesn’t allow a lot of light to filter in.Picture or Accent Windows
Picture windows are usually large and are fixed in a wall. These windows are mostly used in contemporary houses, as style and variety are the main focus of this type. Designs come in different shapes such as octagonal, round, triangular, or bow. This type provides uninterrupted views of the outside environment.Skylights
Skylights are popular for homes with small spaces. These windows are installed overhead to allow natural light to brighten the house. This type usually comes in small rectangular sizes but can be customized to fit the existing window size.Window Frame Types
It is also important to understand the materials that were used to create the window frames as these also dictate the performance of the replacement window.Non-Metal Frames
WoodMost traditional houses use wood for window frames as the materials are readily available and wood is highly customizable to create complex shapes. Wood however, is not as durable as the other types as it is subject to decay.
Vinyl
Vinyl is made of plastic or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to be specific. Modern vinyl is a good insulator and provides good resistance to moisture. Vinyl is not as customizable as wood but this does not require sealing or painting.Metal Frames
Metal frame windows are mostly made of aluminum and are very durable compared to non-metal frames. These are light, strong, and can easily be molded into different shapes and sizes. The disadvantage of metal frames is its poor resistance to heat. It is a very good conductor of heat and cold and are not ideal for extreme weather conditions.
